Student
Exchange Program Germany
The secondary school system (grades 5/7 to 12/13) in the Länder
is divided in educational paths (depending on the Land) with the
respective leaving certificates and qualifications for which different
school types are responsible. There are general secondary education
schools, special schools for the physically handicapped within the
system of general education
(10th/11th grade on). Four main types of general secondary schools
covering compulsory schooling exist: Haupschule, Realschule, Gymnasium
and Gesamtschule. Secondary education is compulsory. Textbooks and
other school material are
provided to
the student by Two Worlds United.
Types
of schools differ according to Länder.
Two Worlds United
students will attend what is called the Gymnasium, or Grammer School.
This is a nine year secondary school for grades 5 through 13, and
it imparts a comprehensive general education for students who wish
to continue their education in a university. Only 35% of German
students enter this prestigious school.
Because
the Gymnasium is designed to prepare students academically for College,
subjects such as art, music and physical education play a smaller
role in the school system. However, it is common for students to
participate in these activities outside of school.
Courses
are not chosen until the 11th grade. Subjects are divided into 3
main categories: language, literature and art; the social sciences;
and mathematics, science and technology. Each of these three categories
must be represented among the courses taken by the student.
Classes
usually begin at 8:30 am finishing around 1:30 pm. Students
commonly bring their own sandwiches for lunch or return to their
homes to eat the meals with their families. Student Exchange Program
