Exchange Student Program
Portugal
Europeans have flocked to Portugal's
extraordinary beaches and graceful palaces for years, but
for the majority of students the country is a rare and wonderful
surprise. Portugal has changed little over recent decades
and remains largely unspoiled. In Portugal, students find
warm and unaffected people, and unique sights.
NNinety-two percent of all visitors to Portugal arrive in
Lisbon, designated as Europe's Cultural Capital in 1995.
This prompted the renovation and improvement of the city's
major historic and cultural monuments, including the venerable
Museum of Ancient Art, the Tower of Belém, and the Belém
Monastery.
Portugal's economy made great advances through the 1970s
and 1980s, and despite an economic downturn in the early
'90s, it is recovering due mostly to public and private
investment as well as export growth. /font>
