Student Exchange Program New Zealand

Primary education lasts for eight years. Secondary education lasts for three years (from Year 9 through Year 11), with a Sixth Form 12th Year and a Seventh Form 13th Year. Entrance to secondary schools is non-selective. The basis of the school program is the New Zealand Curriculum in the essential learning areas of Languages, Mathematics, Science, Technology, Social Sciences, the Arts, Health and Physical Wellbeing. The curriculum emphasises the development of Communication, Numeracy, Information, Problem Solving, Self-Management and Competitive, Social and Co-operative, Physical, and Work and Study Skills. Diagnostic and formative assessment assists students to achieve the objectives set out in the national curriculum statements and published syllabuses. All national school qualifications are administered by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority. Secondary Schools also offer Unit Standard Credits between Levels 1-4 of the National Qualifications Framework (National Certificate Level).

Most high schools in New Zealand are public schools that are funded by the state. While some private schools operated by the Anglican (Episcopalian), Presbyterian or Roman Catholic churches exist, Two Worlds United students will usually attend public schools. Most schools are co-educational, although there are still a number of single sex schools in the densely populated areas. The schools are modeled on the British educational system, and are more formal than their European or American counterparts, but less formal than the Japanese system.

A school uniform is often compulsory. Some schools do not require their seniors to wear a uniform, but instead have a dress code which students must abide by. Two Worlds United participants are expected to follow the school's mandate, whether it is a uniform or dress code.

The academic year in New Zealand begins at the end of January and ends in December. The year is divided into four terms which last approximately 10 weeks, with a 2-week vacation between each. Classes are held Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM with an hour lunch break.
