Student
Exchange Program Greece
Secondary
education is provided in both public and private schools and is divided
into a compulsory first cycle (Gymnasio), from age 12 to 15, and an optional
second cycle (Lykeio) from age 15 to 18. No entrance examinations are required
in either case. A unified senior high school (Eniaio Lykeio) and technical
schools have been phased in since 1998.
Greek students enter elementary school at age six. They attend
six years of elementary school and three years of gymnasia. Lyceums prepare
students in three- or four-year courses for higher education in universities
or technical colleges. Public bilingual schools are available offering classes
in English and Greek. These schools are attended both by Greek and international
students and can offer flexible curriculum, to meet the demands of an international
student. Private schools (American, English, German, Italian, French and
Japanese) with international programs are also available.
Typical subjects include:
Mathematics, History, Physics, Computer Science, Chemistry, Environment,
English, Design, Greek, Astronomy, Biology, Technology, Geography, and European
History.
The school year runs typically
from August to May. Each lesson is 45 minutes long, with breaks lasting
10 minutes. The school lasts from 8am to 3pm. Students attend seven classes
on three days of the week and six classes on the other two days. Transportation
to the school is provided to the students on the program. Student Exchange
